Having high standards does not mean you look down on people. High standards means there are things too valuable to compromise about yourself, like morals your integrity and values.
A person of high standards has more integrity than the usual person. They have strong morals and they are wise enough to be able to look ahead and see the potential for trouble and take steps to avoid it. So, being picky is a good thing.
